Sending Your Files
The following is a guide for sending your files for mixing. These are tips to help keep the work done on your songs focused on mixing and not on organization or fixing. This will help minimize guesswork and make sure a majority of the work goes into being creative with your music and getting the best out of your song.
- I prefer to receive your songs in a Pro Tools session but if you don’t use Pro Tools I will need to get each of the audio files from your song consolidated from the same exact start point (preferably the start of a bar) to the end of the song. In these situations please be sure to double check your edits before consolidating.
- It’s helpful to label all audio files and Pro Tools tracks. It can be very time consuming in a large session to have to sort through unlabeled tracks.
- Please check all your edits for clicks and pops, bad edits or decay cut off.
- If there are fx plugins or automation that you consider vital to the sound of an instrument please send the unprocessed file and then consolidate it from start to finish with the fx or automation and then label the processed audio file the same as the unprocessed file including the name of the fx, plugin or automation.
- I strongly suggest that along with your song you send me a text file with information about your song such as sample rate, bit depth, tempo, key, list of tracks that should be in the session, any instructions for what you do or do not want me to do with your song, like whether you object to any vocal tuning or fx and anything else you think will be useful.
- If you have already tuned vocals I prefer to have a playlist or audio file of the vocal not tuned to make additional refinements if need be.
- If you have sub mixed vocal tracks or instruments it is always preferred to have the tracks you used to make the sub mix if they are available and have them labeled in the audio file or in a text file so I know which tracks were used to make which sub mix.
- A reference rough mix of your song or sound reference is always helpful if you have one you like.
- If you want to sit in on the mix session I prefer to have some time to get a mix foundation built before I would want to have anyone listen and give me more direction. If I’m mixing a remote session I can send you a reference after the same point to get your feedback.
- I usually work from the standpoint of altering the original performance of a song as little as possible so if you want me to be more aggressive in this aspect please let me know.
